Configuring Network Connections In Windows XP

Even though Microsoft had ended the support provided for the once most popular operating system Windows XP, it is still one of the most popular operating systems in use. If you take a close look at the statistics, you will be surprised to know that the even after the end of support, Windows XP is still more in numbers that the latest operating systems, Windows 8 and 8.1 combined. Since you will not be getting any support from Microsoft for your troubles with Windows XP operating system, you will be searching for Windows XP help and DIY instructions for fixing the issues with the system. Here we discuss how to configure a network connection in the Windows XP operating system.

Instructions
  • Open the Start menu by pressing the Windows key found in the keyboard, if the key does not function, click on the Start menu button found at the left bottom corner of the desktop to launch it.
  • Click on the Control Panel button found in the Start menu to open the Control Panel window. When the Control Panel window appears on the screen, click on the Network Connections icon found in it for viewing details about networks.
  • You will be able to see all the available connections in the page that appears on the screen now. Right click on the connection that you would like to configure and then select the option labeled Properties from the context menu that appears on the screen.
  • Windows XP help centre suggests that you click on the Configure option for configuring or changing network adapter settings. Now a new window will appear on the screen, the options on the screen will let you configure the network adapter easily. The main tabs found in this section are, General, Advanced, Driver, Resources, Power Management.
  • If you wish to configure the IP settings of the network, double click on the option labeled as Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) found under the General tab in the window. The system will now provide you with four options, Obtain an IP Address Automatically, Use the Following IP Address, Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically, Use the Following DNS Server Addresses.
  • If you select the first option, the system will obtain IP address automatically from the network, whereas if you select the second option you can set the IP address manually. While selecting the third option sets the DNS servers automatically, selecting the fourth option allows you to set DNS servers manually. 
If you follow the simple instructions given above, you would be able to configure network connections in Windows XP with ease.
