One of the major advantages of the Windows operating system
is that it provides the user with capabilities to change the layout of the
desktop screen as required. Some of you may have the habit of changing the
icons for some tasks and then re arranging them to how it was before, which
proves to be a tiresome task. However, Windows has some in-built tools to
arrange icons and then revert to the previous layout of the icons. This tool
can be used when you accidentally sort the icons by their name or size and want
to go back to the default layout.
Instructions:
- Double click on the web browser, go to the Windows help web site, and then download the Layout.zip file to your computer. When asked where to save the file, select Desktop as the destination for ease of access.
- When the download is completed, right click on the Layout.zip file and then select the option that reads Extract from the right click menu. Now a new folder will be created in your desktop containing the two files of the Layouts.zip file extracted.
- Open the folder by double clicking on it and then select the Layout.dll file and right click on the file and select copy option to copy the file.
- Now after copying the file, go to the path specified, C:\Windows\System32\ and paste the file there.
- Now come back to the folder extracted in the desktop and double click on the other file named Layout.reg to add that file to the system registry.
- Now, open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon located at the left bottom corner of the desktop.
- In the right side pane of the Start menu, you see an icon labeled Computer, right click on it to open a menu to show various options including Save Desktop Icon Layout and the Restore Desktop Icon Layout options.
- Now, to re arrange the icons in your desktop as required, click on the Save Desktop Icon Layout option and then rearrange icons in any order.
- If you wish to go back to the previous arrangement of the desktop, go to the same menu and then click on the Restore Desktop Icon Layout option to revert to old settings.
If you follow these simple steps from the Windows help team, you will be able
to easily save and restore the desktop icon layouts with ease.
