1. If a file is corrupted, Microsoft has a small program that is capable of repairing the files up to a small extend. What you have to do is:
a. Force Microsoft Word (whatever version it is) to open the word document file.

Repairing a Corrupt File You Cannot Opened in Microsoft Word
1. For repairing inoperable documents, there is another method to repair. Use the draft mode to open the file without updating the links. Using this method is very effective according to my experience. After opening Microsoft Word processor, click on the View menu button in the main toolbar and choose Normal option by clicking on it.
2. Choose the Options from the Tools menu. A new options window will open, which has a variety of tabs for you to choose from.
3. Click on the View tab and make sure that there is a check mark in the boxes, which is aligned to the text picture placeholders and draft font.
4. Click on the tab named general. Also, make sure that the box aligned to the text update automatic links at open is unchecked.
5. Click on the OK button at the very bottom of the Options window to apply and save the settings and to close the window. Now you can open the document and check if the repairing process has done any good or not in recovering the file.
