Microsoft has now announced the version lineup for the Windows 8 operating system. The operating system will be called Windows 8 officially. There will be four versions of the Windows 8 OS. But in the case of the Windows 8 operating system, you are never going to be faced with the prospect of standing at Best Buy staring at four wrapped boxes, trying to find out which version to buy.

Windows 8
This seems to be a rough equivalent to the Windows 7 Home Premium. This is the version with most of the stuff that users might want.
Windows 8 Pro
This version has everything in Windows 8 and more. It is designed to help the enthusiasts and business professionals get a broader set of Windows 8 technologies. This version of the Windows 8 operating system includes all the features in Windows 8 OS plus added features for virtualization, encryption, domain connectivity, and PC management. The Windows Media Center will be available as an economical media pack add-on in the Windows 8 Pro. If you are an enthusiast or would like to use your computer in a business environment, you will need Windows 8 Pro.
Windows 8 Enterprise
This version will be available only to the enterprise customers. These are companies that maintain software licensing agreements with Microsoft. This version includes everything in the Windows 8 Pro together with the features for IT organizations that enable advanced security, PC management and deployment, new mobility scenarios, virtualization, and much more.
Windows RT
This version is so much of an outlier that this version is not even called Windows 8. This version will be coming pre installed in tablets and other devices that make use of the ARM processors. This version will be sporting the new Metro interface and will come with bundled version of Microsoft Office. This version will not be able to run the old school Windows apps. This version will also be missing many of the features that are aimed at the IT folks and other people in the corporate world.
