Fixing MSVCR80.dll Error In Outlook

While opening the Microsoft Outlook application, you may sometimes get error messages that say- This application has failed to start because MSVCR80.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. According to Outlook tech support, such issues originate from the add-in that might have created its own outlook.exe.manifest file in the Outlook installation directory. You would have installed the add-in earlier in your computer.

For fixing such issues where you cannot start Microsoft Outlook application, you can follow these instructions provided by the Outlook tech support:

Deleting manifest file:
  • You can delete the outlook.exe.manifest file in the installation directory of the version of Outlook you are using in your computer. If you are using Outlook 2007, the location of the manifest file is: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12. If you are using 64-bit version of Windows the location is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12
Repair Office
  • After deleting the file, you need to run a repair on your Office installation program. Alternatively, you can also start Office Diagnostics by clicking on Start, All Programs followed by Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Tools and then on Microsoft Office Diagnostics.
Check your add-ins
  • Sometimes even after restarting the Outlook application, you might see the same error message. This is because of the fact that some add-in would keep on changing this file back.
  • Here, you need to first disable all your add-ins and enable each one to identify the faulty add-in. After you see the add-in, which was causing such issues, you can either uninstall it or contact its vendor to see if an update exists for it.
Important! Do not download DLL from public DLL repository sites!
  • As stated by the Outlook tech support technicians, never try to download MSVCR80.DLL from any of the many on-line DLL download options available on the Internet. This is because in most of the cases. You will either get an old version or van infected one to download.
  • To fix issues where you cannot start Microsoft Outlook, you can get the original version of the program from the official website of Microsoft. You just need to download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 installer on your computer.
